RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP

Milan Garcin

After graduating with a degree in philosophy in 2012 at the Paris-Sorbonne University (Paris IV), Milan Garcin obtained a master’s degree in philosophy and aesthetics, under the supervision of Pr. Jacqueline Lichtenstein, with a specialisation in the appearance of abstract art, and color theory, from a historiographical and epistemological perspective (“The Quantum Eye”, Master Degree, Paris Sorbonne University, 2014). He finished his PhD in art history in 2021, under the supervision of Pr. Thierry Dufrêne (Paris X Nanterre University & Ecole du Louvre), with the support of the Francis Bacon MB Art Foundation scholarship. His thesis, entitled “The artist’s eye: looking at the library of Francis Bacon’s studio. For a new methodology regarding artist’s libraries” concerns the role of the artist’s library on his practice and its methodological and historiographical issues. The text offers new perspectives concerning Bacon’s source-images, while the study includes a 3D graph-based database, which allows simulating at a global scale the association of ideas occurring in the artist’s mind. He now teaches art history, including at the Ecole du Louvre in Paris.

Aside from the academic area, he curated several exhibitions focusing on collective psyche, mythologies and trans-chronological approaches (“Ulysse, voyage dans une Méditerranée de légendes”, 2021, HDE Var; “Pierre et Gilles, La fabrique des idoles”, 2019, Musée National de la Musique – Philharmonie de Paris). He also regularly writes essays for exhibition catalogues (En quelle langue faut-il écrire l’histoire de l’art, in Carambolages, dir. Jean-Hubert Martin, Paris, Réunion des Musées Nationaux – Grand Palais, 2016).
