1990

On 23 February, Bacon goes to Madrid to see the Velázquez exhibition at the Prado.

In early March, Bacon visits Monaco.

In May, Bacon and Capelo stay at the Hotel Pont Royal, Paris.

23 May – 29 June: An exhibition of Bacon’s works is held at the Marlborough Gallery, New York.

In July, Bacon and Capelo go to Toulouse, then Aix-en-Provence.

On 30 September, Michel Leiris dies.

1991

In mid-January, Bacon and Capelo stay a week at the Hotel Pont Royal, Paris.

In August, Bacon goes to Paris and spends time with Eddy Batache and Reinhard Hassert. He then travels to Madrid, but is forced to return to London two days later for health reasons.

In October, Michel Archimbaud begins to interview Bacon in his studio at 7 Reece Mews for his book Francis Bacon, entretiens avec Michel Archimbaud, which will be published in 1992 (an English edition entitled Francis Bacon, In Conversation with Michel Archimbaud is to be published in 1998).

In December, Bacon, Eddy Batache and Reinhard Hassert visit the Alberto Giacometti exhibition at the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris.

Bacon paints his last triptych (simply entitled Triptych) and his last painting, Study of a Bull (1991).

1992

On 27 January, Isabel Rawsthorne dies.

On 18 April, against the advice of Paul Brass, his doctor, and several of his friends, Bacon goes to Madrid to see José Capelo. On 20 April, he falls gravely ill and is admitted the following day to the Clínica Ruber for pneumonia, aggravated by his asthma. He dies of a heart attack on 28 April, aged 82.

In his will, Bacon has bequeathed everything he owns to John Edwards.
